Sweet As Candy Apple Crisp

It's that time of year for wonderful tasty apples.  This recipe will use up a few Granny Smiths and your family or guests won't mind either. You will hear a few oohs and aahs when they dig into this rich dessert.

Ingredients

6 Firm Ripe Granny Smith Apples
1 cup sugar
2 cups packed light brown sugar
1 cup self rising flour
1 cup water
1 stick cold butter cut into 1/4" cubes
Ground Cinnamon

Directions

Preheat Oven to 350 degrees F

Make Syrup:  Put 1 cup water and 1 cup sugar into saucepan.  Heat to boiling then turn down heat to just simmering, stirring to combine sugar and water and prevent sticking. Cook syrup until hot and slightly thickened about 3 minutes.

Core and cut apples into 1/4" slices. Place slices into sugar syrup simmering on the stove. Heat until apples are slightly tender. You don't want them totally tender or they will be mushy when baking.
Place apple slices into 6 individual baking compotes equally or one large single baking dish.
Pour a little of the sugar syrup into each bowl dividing equally.
Sprinkle a heaping teaspoon of Cinnamon over each compote or sprinkle liberally over large baking dish.

Combine brown sugar and flour together mixing together with fingers well. Add little chunks of butter mixing lightly with fingers to evenly distribute.
Top each compote or large baking dish with this mixture.

Bake 30 to 45 minutes or until browned to your liking.

The topping will cook and become somewhat like candy.  I think I told you this is not for those watching their weight or sugar intake.

Cool slightly the longer it cools the more it will harden and become mouth watering delicious!  I don't recommend topping with ice cream that would definitely a sugar overload for anyone!
Serves 6

See the bottom overflow browned and cooked enough to be hard and like candy!

Enjoy!
